Children with asthma:



  1. Understand what asthma is
    • Read Kids and Asthma section of this website
    • Visit your local Asthma Foundations website, or talk to someone on the Asthma Information Line 1800 645 130
    • Consult with your local Health Professional
  2. Understand the medication
    • Work with a health professional to work out the best medications (or medication regime) for your child
    • Make sure your child always carries their blue reliever medication with them
    • Preventer medication only works effectively if taken every day, even when your child is well
  3. Have an Asthma Action Plan
    • An Asthma Action Plan is an individualised written set of instructions on how best to manage your asthma, and is an important requisite for good asthma management
    • Develop an Asthma Action Plan for your child in consultation with your GP
    • Ensure your child's asthma is reviewed regularly, even when they are well. Visit your local GP at least every 6 months

  5. Work with your health professional to identify triggers
    • Everybody’s asthma is different
    • It is important to identify the particular trigger/s for your child so that you can effectively manage them, thereby minimising asthma symptoms
  6. Promote Asthma Friendly Environments
    • Ensure environments where your child spends time are Asthma Friendly eg. home, childcare, school, sporting venues.
    • Call the Asthma Information Line on 1800 645 130 to find out some things you can do around your home or child's most common environments to make them asthma friendly
